"Cas," short for Castiel, is the main man here at Element. He was bred by Sandy Bohr of HiTop Border Collies in Northern CA. He is a big, cheeky boy with beautiful structure, strong movement, an awesome temperament, and lots of glamour.
He is a really cool guy. He is incredibly smart and easy to train, very athletic, and works equally well for food and toys. He has a lot of drive, but is also very cuddly and loves to hang out. Not noise or motion sensitive (could care less about gunshots or fireworks), very stable. He loves people and most other dogs. He's a natural and enthusiastic retriever 😉. He has great manners, and is super trustworthy off leash. He shows great aptitude for sports, both mentally and physically.
Structurally, he is very nice. Around 20.75” and 45 lbs, great bone, gorgeous outline, and a lovely long tail. He has an awesome coat; straight, good texture, and plenty of it, but not excessive in any way. Although I'd prefer a bit more shoulder angle, his front is set well and he has a nice neck. Nice pasterns and really pretty, tight feet. Beautiful, strong rear, lovely croup, and a smooth, low tail set. He has strong sidegait and is clean coming and going. He has a pleasing head with nice ears, fill, and underjaw. Scissors bite, full dentition. Overall, he's just a very solid, moderate dog that I think has a lot to offer the breed.
Sports:
Cas is currently competing in conformation, NoseWork, and agility, and is getting ready to compete in obedience and rally. He was the "star" of his S.T.A.R. puppy class and is a blast to work with. Better yet, he's a wonderful companion, and loves nothing more than to play fetch and snuggle with his mama. He recently earned his Intermediate, Advanced, and Performer (champion) Trick Dog titles with ease. Cas earned his first Q in agility on 10/23/16 at the BMAC NADAC trial in Novice Tunnelers. He also has his ACT1 title from AKC.
We have recently discovered our favorite thing to do together.... NoseWork! Cas absolutely loves this sport and earned lots of qualifying scores at his first few trials. He is finished with his UKC Novice title, has his Advanced Element title in Interior, his Novice Handler Discrimination title, an Advanced Containers leg, as well as his first four PT titles. He also has a leg in AKC Scentwork Novice Containers. View some of our Nosework videos here.
Cas and I recently had the opportunity to try our first UpDog disc competition, and had a blast! He placed first in Frizgility out of 34 dogs, and fourth in Four-Way Play and Funkey. I can’t wait to pursue more disc competition with him in the future, when opportunity arises!
Cas recently starred in his first nationwide TV commercial for Ricola cough drops! He was an absolute star and performed all of his scenes with his trademark enthusiasm. See the video here.
Cas is a talented and biddable stockdog, who works sheep, ducks, and cattle. He currently has his Started sheep titles in AKC and ASCA, a leg in Started ducks in AKC, and his PT title. He earned his titles with all placements in large classes. We have plans for higher level titles with him, as he is capable of the required more advanced skills like driving. For pictures and video of his progress, click here.
Cas earned his Rally Novice title with scores of 99, 96, and 97 on 10/6/20. These scores qualified him for the AKC Rally National Championships in 2021!
Cas has his Versatility award from the Border Collie Society of America. To earn this award, dogs must earn titles in at least three different events, one of which must be herding. He also earned his ChX title, which is awarded by BCSA to dogs who are AKC Champions as well as titled in herding. We are very proud of him!
Conformation:
Cas is a Grand Champion, a multiple BOB winner, NOHS group winner, and multiple NOHS group placer. He finished his AKC CH and GCH titles in only a few show weekends, with specialty and supported entry wins along the way. His first weekend out as a special, Cas took back-to-back BOB's over top specials for two five-point Grand Champion majors! He finished his GCH with multiple wins over top ranked specials. He is currently ranked in the Top Ten Border Collies in NOHS standings for 2018.
